I might have lost track of things because the beach event didn't trigger until about day 400 (and it took quite a long session with grep to figure out why) but I felt railroaded into betraying Rin. Other comments make it seem like I should have had a more active choice in the matter, so is there a trick I missed?
no it does kind of seem that way, but you can trigger basically all the main events you need to to get to the beach before you have to do shadenfreude to progress. non-linear progressions like this can be tough as is, but all you really have to do is kiss chika, and build up to shadenfreude and you can actually stop there.

on the topic of killers, i hope its context dependent. like depending on your choices, it changes who the killer is, though im not sure is scripted scenes can work and grab data like that in RenPy.
Yeah, no, it isn't railroading you, there just isn't a bright neon sign pointing at Schadenfreude and telling you not to trigger it. Assuming you are going into it after the beach event was added, you're lucky as some of us went into Schadenfreude when there was no consequence just to be blocked off before we even had a chance to save ourselves from Rin's wrath. You're safe even at the level needed for Schadenfreude as long as you stop all Chika interactions once you hit the required stats without triggering the next event, but some of us were well beyond that before the beach event even existed.

am i like, the only one that got Rin's last scene on accident? i had to protect her. and sana, i couldnt stay with ayase that night. The H is fine, its kind of expected in games like this (i mean, TAGS) but the story and substory are honestly so much more interesting. and ive never actually seen a game (or visual novel) where i actually identified with characters when i was their age like this.

as a person who has dealth with eating disorders, crippling social insecurity, clinical depression, self harm... yeah. its very hard not to empathize. H games should not be making me tear up like this.

ALSO AS A CODER DO YOU KNOW HOW TERRIFYING IT IS TO HAVE ELDERICH MESSAGE RESPONSES IN HEX APPEAR AND FLASH ON YOUR SCREEN? I CAN DAMN NEAR SIGHTREAD IT AND THAT WAS REALLY SCARY
I know, it's more like a normal game with porn elements than a porn game with story and I love it because of that.

0.10.0 Part 1 Details ~

- 14 New Main Events
- 2 Missable Lust Events (10 Lust Requirement)
- All events will play in succession once the first one triggers (Just like the beach)
- Halloween costumes will be added to Invite-Over unlockable outfits (At 30 Lust) in Part 2

View attachment 873827
But the bigger question is are any of the events another Schadenfreude lockout situation? Not necessarily events that will lock us out in the future like with Schadenfreude being added at least one build before the beach event, more like any that will lock us out at all. I'm not talking about missing stuff because my stats aren't high enough, I mean things like going too far with a character and locking myself out of another, once again the prime example being Schadenfreude.

Here's a list of all the names that trigger extra dialogue that I've figured out so far

That first one, I can't stop laughing. That was a good one, Selebus. Also, Chika is a freaking savage, especially that last one. I felt the heat from that burn from here.

Bah, don't be afraid of making Haruka call Sensei "Husband", it isn't as world-breaking as trying to get Ami to call him "Daddy".
I died laughing at trying to get Chika to call you Chinami, Yumi or Rin, stuck with "Sensei", because Chika is a party pooper.

So I finally got around to playing my original save through all of Rin's events and the beach scene from the bad homie perspective, making this the first time I've watched a large chunk of events in full because I stopped right in the middle of Chika's Detention event once I realized I forgot that my save was no good for an all girl run as it was originally intended for. This also marks the second time I have gone through the beach event as I usually reserve the second play through for the full game. Normally, with anything fiction, I put up emotional barriers and try to play it from a completely logical standpoint, something that I have never succeeded in with this game, but it not only broke those barriers once, it has broken them every time so far. It actually hurt to watch Rin break down like that even after knowing exactly what happens and it hurt worse knowing I was the cause of her pain. Not many works of fiction can do that to me, maybe 15 total from all mediums combined. I've come to realize that this game isn't good, it isn't great....it's absolutely amazing, among the top 5 games of its type that I have played and that list is multiple pages long at this point. This is a true work of art you have going Selebus and I really mean that. I might even be able to call it a masterpiece. I think you've more than earned my support with that scene alone, so I will be considering it in a few days, when the next month kicks in.

Yes this is an amazing game, incredibly well written from all perspectives. My major concern is I can't see how this game has a happy ending. We have too many fingers in too many pies, it can't end well.

It doesn't have to and I'm not sure Sensei deserves it, granted I might be channeling a bit of post rejection Rin right now, more like a hypothetical version of her that didn't just let what Sensei did to her love interest slide and actually got visibly pissed at him for it, so I might be more than a little biased on that. That's how deeply it affected me that I was the cause of her suffering in that moment. That really hit home for me because I was in that exact same situation, minus the self harm, I didn't do that crap and don't do it now, at the exact same part of my life as Rin is in the game. In fact, I still go through the pain when the situation comes up as I'm sure we may continue to see for a little bit of Rin's story yet. It's not easy to get over that kind of thing, not after such an extended period of time and not when someone you trusted and who knew you felt that way betrayed you on an extremely deep level. In fact, Rin is a little too calm about this whole rejection thing if you ask me, something doesn't feel right with her and it is definitely raising alarms in my head that she needs more help than we have seen her get. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm actually genuinely worried for a bunch of pixels on a computer screen. Dang it, Selebus, what have you done to me. :p

Honestly don't know what kind of ending I'm looking for in this game. In a lot of games, I like to only focus on the ones that interest me- Play their routes and get their endings, I'm not really a completionist get all CGs type of person. Though obviously Selebus apparently is planning to give all girls their respective endings but instead I just want a singular ending where all the girls end up happy somehow. I don't even mind if sensei at the end gets punished for it- I just want them to be all happy even if it isn't a happy one for the player...

Though I wouldn't mind if there was a secret/extremely hard to get harem ending where everyone's happy.

its never about the endings, its always about the journey.
Truer words have never been commented in regards to Lessons in Love, except maybe a few of Selebus's fourth wall breaks in the actual game, of course.

Ngl, I've hated that kind of thinking for a while now. It's obviously just differing philosophies and I'll probably use some extreme examples but I've never understood why people enjoy that sort of thing.

It's the kind of thing where I never enjoy stories where if I know the main character/heroine ends up dying at the end or something. I don't like stories that have all the happy moments and struggles throughout the middle only to have a bitter ending. I'd rather take an empty one/open ended one instead.

I personally wouldn't mind extreme exaggerated suffering if I knew I would end up at a good place. After all, what's the point of living all happy and such to just have it taken away from you in the end?

I like Re:Zero a lot for example, the journey is horrible, excruciating, and hard to watch at times. It makes me appreciate Subaru more as a character, not many would do the things he would. He goes through the hardship just because he wants everyone else to be happy- He himself might not have a happy ending at the end but he's damned himself to at least make sure everyone else does.

So I really wouldn't mind if there's an extremely hard to reach ending for this game if just to give all the characters a bit of happiness at the end- Cause screw the journey if everyone else just ends up sad.

TL;DR: I'll take a shitty painful journey over a nice one as long as the girls end up happy. Selebus pls :)

As I've said many times in this thread: it's a denpa game. It's pretty much guaranteed to get worse than we've seen so far, and almost certain the first ending we get is going to be a very very bad one. I wouldn't be surprised if every character dies alone and crying from both immense physical and emotional pain come the first ending.

I just hope the individual girl routes have happy endings.

Yeah, you've nailed it. Senpai doesn't love any of the characters like we do. So that disconnect is going to come back and bite us hard the further we go. He is just a pervert looking to get his rocks off, as much as we would want him to be a deep and meaningful character, he just isn't.

I can't see this ending as a harem and get all the girls and live happily ever after. Most of the girls are extremely jealous and possessive. That means hearts will inevitably be broken, and senpai will have to have some sort of reckoning. This will be one of those games where I enjoy the ride but will probably avoid the ending and stop playing when it draws near.

As much as I would love a harem ending, put that knife down right now Ayane or so help me you will never get the D from me again, I'm conflicted now because I don't think that's something our character has earned. In fact, he's pretty much already earned growing old and dying alone with what he did to Rin. I see more heartbreak in the future once Chika realizes how naive she has been all this time, not knowing how terrible the man she fell for really is. I myself dread the end that Sensei has earned for himself, it can't possibly be pretty and most definitely isn't all sunshine and rainbows.

Ayane's beach scene really shows how easily fucked Sensei is. He got extremely lucky that the one girl who wouldn't ruin his life by finding out caught him.

That's the weird part though, it honestly doesn't feel that consistent because multiple times he has scenes with Futaba, Ami, and other characters where he seems like he cares about them- Then he'll have moments where he'll monologue in his head that he doesn't feel anything for these girls and such. Even one of the talks with Kirin has him saying that he doesn't want to break them, or at least not the extent she does. He'll also have moments where he realizes that he actually doesn't want to break this world that he's just joined as well as his introspective talks with Maya makes me think that he's growing some form of attachment or at the very least- Just because he wants to fuck them, doesn't mean he wants to leave them all broken or maybe it's just damage control at the end.

I'm not sure how he'll develop by the end of the game but at the furthest point in the game, I like to believe he's at least shown a little bit more thought into his actions compared to the beginning of the game instead of his original plan of just fucking and forgetting.

I agree, there is this anomaly where he constantly tells us he doesn't feel love or is incapable of feeling love, then goes out of his way to show he cares for them. Does he pay for Yumi and Chinami's phone plan because he's a nice guy or because he just wants to get in Chika's pants? His motives are not always clear.

The inconsistency in Senpai's actions makes it incredibly difficult to relate to him. Maybe that's the point of the story. As it stands, I don't really care what his fate is, but I do care about what it means to the girls. I mean realistically, he only gets the girls because he is good looking and is the only male around. So for most of the girls it's just a crush so they should be fine. But for a girl like Ami for example....

You know, the nicest person I've ever met in real life was a client at a homeless shelter I used to work at. He was always very nice, kind, helpful, and generally a very good person. I specifically remember thinking that while I was holding the papers in my hand showing his diagnosis for antisocial personality disorder. He literally was incapable of feeling anything for me or anyone else, but was very good at manipulating people. It's possible Sensei has some form of that disorder.

[Edit]
This post is pretty bad at explaining exactly what I was trying to get across and is painting with a very broad brush. iwassnow does a much better job of explaining APD in his post below, since I'm quite ignorant about it. To keep from making some bad generalizations, please read through it.
Hey there! I'm coming back from my otherwise mute lurking to dispel something here. Antisocial personality disorder does not mean you don't feel anything for others(ie lack empathy). That's sociopathy(which is a rare subset of APD). APD, that I have, means you have a difficult time communicating and/or understanding feelings(it's a broad diagnosis that covers many actual behaviors). In my personal case, I have a difficult time expressing my own emotions to others for a lack of ability to communicate them in a way that my listener understands(as opposed to a lack of understanding of my own feelings myself which can also be APD).

Sociopathy, that a friend of mine has, is primarily identified by a lack of empathy and an inability to show legitimate feelings towards others(as well as manipulation to conceal that behavior). This also is very specific in that it doesn't mean you don't have emotions, but rather your emotional spectrum is narrow. For my friend, he does an excellent job of being a decent human being, and as a rarity does not lie to others that his behavior is an act(he explained to me that he knows how he is is wrong, and so he's trying his best to make up for it while being honest; most sociopaths aren't like this).

Sensei however likely does have APD but not sociopathy, because his contradictory internal monologues seem to alude to other feelings but his response to himself seem to be to immediately bury those feelings. That's reminisce of a conditioned response, and people with such behavior usually lack emotional intelligence. They don't understand their own feelings, and how they react to them can be widely different from person to person. In my own case, when I was younger, APD for me meant I also did not understand myself. Years of therapy, research, and trying to grow up later, I'm able to at least understand myself.

So the thing I should clarify here and the reason I wrote this wall of text was in defense of that man you met. While sociopathy is a form of APD, it is usually not what most diagnosis mean. And while I cannot speak for him spefically(because maybe he does have sociopathy), I don't want others to make a wrong assumption and believe that all persons with APD don't feel empathy towards others. We do, and in fact, often more strongly than the average person which is contributory to our difficulties with handling them.

And since I know I have difficulty with communicating my own emotions, I'm going to robotically state that the above was meant to only be educational and clarifying, not confrontational(your statement wasn't wrong, but its lack of context would easily create misleading perceptions). So I hope I didn't come off as offensive or rude. :S
